Message from the Co-Chairs

Welcome to Art with Heart 2009, presented by TD Waterhouse.

Co-ChairsLucien Freud famously reported that what he asks of a painting is that it “astonish, disturb, seduce, convince.” Each year, Art with Heart presents a collection of Canadian contemporary art that does just that, proving that art is alive and well in Canada.

Astonishing indeed are Harold Town's dynamic depictions of John Lennon and Yoko Ono, available in a Limited Edition on this 30th anniversary year of the couple's peace campaign. This is a rare opportunity for collectors to take home richly vivid and important portraits of 20th-Century pop icons, as rendered by a true Canadian master.

Also seductive is this year's June Callwood Artist's Multiple by Michael Dumontier and Neil Farber, entitled "Stereo." The duo's internationally recognized careers were launched through their membership in the infl uential Winnipeg-based art collective Royal Art Lodge, and we are pleased to offer their edgy and provocative work at an accessible price.

In amassing this year's superb collection, we could not ask for better curatorial
guidance than that of Bill Clarke and Ann MacDonald. From the moment the fi nal gavel fell at last year's auction, this skillful pair was in hot pursuit of signifi cant works from Canada's best artists and galleries. We have also been blessed by a wonderful team of Curatorial Board, Steering Committee members, event volunteers and docents who have given so generously of their time and talent, proving once again how much fun a shared commitment to good work can be.

As ever, we are grateful for TD Waterhouse's visionary and enduring support of Casey House through Art with Heart. And we are so very appreciative of you, our patrons, for your generous bids tonight. Amidst the fun and beauty of the evening, we hope you will take a moment to refl ect on the reason we're all here. Casey House brings meaningful improvement to the health and well-being of people living with HIV/AIDS in our community. Tonight, we come together as a community to be a part of that: a beautiful thing indeed.

Wishing you all happy bidding—
