CASEY HOUSE AND THE ART WITH HEART COMMITTEE HONOUR JAMES LAHEY

James Lahey is the only artist who has donated work to Art with Heart every year since its inception in 1994. He is a critically acclaimed and internationally exhibited artist whose work is included in several prestigious collections.

"In 1994, Art with Heart was a much smaller affair," he recalls. (In fact, the first Art with Heart was held in Casey House's parking lot.) "I was just starting with a new dealer and a bunch of us from the gallery helped. We had all been affected by the loss of a friend or loved one, so I was happy to have been asked."

Casey House means a great deal to Lahey because he has lost a number of friends to HIV/AIDS. "A close friend passed away with supportive care from Casey House," he says. "His own family had little to do with him, and this was a source of deep anguish for him - this memory has never left me."

"I contribute each year because it is my way of giving something that says I remember you, I haven't forgotten - you're still missed." Lahey makes a point of contributing something special each year, and often he has made pieces specifically for Art with Heart. "This year, in June Callwood's memory, I am donating an Orchid picture that I had decided to keep for my own collection," he says. "After hearing of June's death, and knowing how fond she was of these paintings, it seemed appropriate to give it to Casey House."

Lahey's unwavering support of Art with Heart has earned him Casey House's eternal gratitude. Says Lahey: "Supporting Casey House felt right in 1994 - it still does."
